Have you ever heard of the Flint Water Treatment Plant? The water plant was originally constructed in 1952 and underwent a major renovation in mid-2014.  After the renovation, the City is now able to filter and purify higher volumes raw water to the City residents and service areas.  The Flint River is the current temporary source of raw water.

As fascinating as it sound, the water plant is currently pressure. Some Flint residents are complaining that the city’s water is causing skin problems for some children. Some parents claim it’s the reason behind unexplained rashes on local children and even sick pets. In response, the city government is adding a carbon filtration system within the next few weeks, a step that the city says will cut a class of pollutants. Now, installation of the Granulated Carbon filter media (GAC) is underway at Flint’s Water Treatment Plant.

Installation of the GAC is one of many improvements to the water system. The GAC filter media will immediately greatly reduce the amount of Total Organic Carbon (TOC) in the water which is expected to significantly reduce the formation of total trihalomethanes (TTHM). TTHM is the colourless, odourless gas byproduct created by the reaction between TOC and the chlorine used for disinfecting water during treatment. By drastically reducing the amount of TOC in the water through the GAC, the formation of TTHM is also expected to be reduced.
